‘Tis the Season to Amplify: Support Adhikaar

As the holidays approach, you may be plotting what gifts to get your friends and family. But have you thought of giving a gift to your community?

This post is the fourth of a 5-part series highlighting grassroots organizations with mutual aid components that could use your support this winter - and beyond.

(Don’t miss out! Read the first , second , and third parts too.)

This series focuses on groups serving Western Queens, particularly Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Corona.

Love Wins Food Pantry is just one of many neighborhood mutual aid organizations in this area. Some of them have been helping Queens residents for years, offering resources, services, direct action, and more. This holiday season, consider supporting a group like Adhikaar.

Adhikaar

7107 Woodside Ave, Woodside, NY 11377

Founded in 2005, this women-led, Woodside-based community center serves the Nepali-speaking immigrant and refugee community. Adhikaar means rights in Nepali, and true to its name, this group focuses on immigration rights, healthcare, language justice, and labor rights, especially those of domestic and nail salon workers.

Since the start of the pandemic, Adhikaar has advocated for workers excluded from pandemic relief funds. Undocumented immigrants in particular have been excluded not only from relief funds, but from unemployment insurance and food stamps. To support the center’s work on behalf of excluded workers, you can sign this petition.

To better understand their work, please follow Adhikaar on Instagram and Facebook. You can also donate to or fundraise for them here.
