Nonreligious Food Pantries in Western Queens
There is a master list of Western Queens food pantries available on the Love Wins Food Pantry website. If you check it out, you’ll find that most of the pantries are affiliated with religious groups. For example, ICNA Relief is a Muslim nonprofit, while the Salvation Army is a Christian charity organization.
While I admire the efforts of faith-based groups to fight hunger, I’ve also realized that they are not suited to meet the needs of the entire Queens community.
In fact, many folks have had bad experiences with religion in the past and prefer to avoid religious spaces as a result. Maybe they were once subjected to gossip about their gender identity at church, or had family that shamed them for not believing.
If you need food but dread the thought of going into a church to get it, you are not the only one. You deserve to receive support in a way that is comfortable and feels dignified to you. Love Wins Food Pantry, as a queer and secular space, could offer you that support. The following three pantries are not religious either. And don’t forget to pay a visit to your local community fridge!
